Linear Access Control Installation: The Fort Worth Owner’s Guide

Linear access control installation in Fort Worth typically runs between $385 and $940 installed, depending on which Linear component failed and whether the existing wiring is intact. We stock Linear-compatible keypads, receivers, and control boards on the truck, so most replacements happen same-day. The way most owners find out their access control has failed is simple: the gate stops opening from the keypad, or a tenant’s remote suddenly won’t work while every other remote still does.

Linear built its reputation on durable, straightforward access control gear. But Fort Worth heat does a number on outdoor keypads and the wiring behind them. We see keypads that work fine at 7 a.m. and go dead at 3 p.m. once the afternoon sun hits the metal housing. The electronics inside overheat, the keypad membrane separates from the board, or the faceplate cracks and lets moisture into the contacts. If you’re standing at your keypad pressing buttons and nothing happens, the fix is usually a new keypad or a receiver board, not a new gate operator. That distinction saves Fort Worth homeowners a lot of money every year.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear is now part of the Nice/Nortek family, but the older Linear branding still dominates driveways across Fort Worth. The two most common lines we work on are the Linear MegaCode series and the Linear Multi-Code series. MegaCode uses rolling-code technology with a 1,000,000+ code combination range, which is why the remotes are still widely used today. Multi-Code is the older 10-position DIP switch system. They are not cross-compatible. If you have a Multi-Code receiver and someone sells you a MegaCode remote, it will never open your gate. We see that mismatch at least once a month.

To identify which you have, look at the label on the receiver board inside your gate operator. A MegaCode receiver will say “MegaCode” or carry a part number starting with MDR or MCR. A Multi-Code receiver will list a model like 1099, 3021, or 3089. The DIP switches are visible on the older boards. If the label is sun-bleached or missing, we photograph the board and match it against Linear’s reference library before we install anything. On OEM versus aftermarket: for Linear keypads and receivers, we recommend OEM or Linear-compatible boards from known manufacturers. The no-name aftermarket keypads fail in Fort Worth’s weather inside of two years. A genuine Linear or quality-compatible keypad usually lasts five to seven years here, assuming it’s not getting direct afternoon sun without a shade cover.

Signs Your Linear Access Control Installation Is Failing

Signs Your Linear Access Control Installation Is Failing
  • Keypad works intermittently, worse in heat. The rubber membrane is separating from the circuit board underneath, or the board itself has heat-fractured solder joints. Once it becomes heat-sensitive, it’s done. You can chase it with shade covers, but the failure will return.
  • One remote works, all others stopped. That’s not the receiver. That’s the individual remote’s battery or the remote itself. If one remote died and the other three work, the receiver is fine. Replace the remote or its battery before calling anyone.
  • All remotes stopped at once. The receiver board has failed, lost its programming, or the antenna wire has been chewed or cut. On Linear receivers, the antenna is a small black wire. We’ve found them pinched in gate arm installations enough times that it’s the first thing we check.
  • Keypad lights up but won’t release the gate. The keypad is transmitting, but the receiver isn’t hearing it. This can be a failed receiver relay, a broken wire between the receiver and the gate control board, or a lost code. It’s rarely the gate motor itself.
  • Gate opens randomly without anyone pressing anything. A failing receiver relay can close a circuit on its own, or a water-damaged keypad can send phantom signals. This is a safety concern, not just an annoyance. We treat phantom openings as urgent because a gate that opens on its own is a liability for everyone on the property.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Fort Worth homes, Linear access control installation pricing runs:

  • Linear keypad replacement: $385 to $640 installed. Includes the new keypad, programming to your existing receiver, and verification that the gate opens and closes from the keypad before we leave.
  • Linear receiver board replacement: $420 to $710 installed. Includes matching the receiver to your existing remotes or programming new remotes if needed, plus a photo log of the board we removed and the board we installed.
  • Full access control swap (keypad + receiver): $680 to $940 installed. We do this when both components are aged out or when a homeowner wants one documented service record for the whole system.

The range comes down to three things: whether your existing wiring is still good, whether we’re matching old remotes or adding new ones, and how accessible the receiver is inside your operator housing. Every Vance Gate Repair quote is written before any work starts. You get a flat price in writing, a documented photo record of what was found and what was installed, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the access control installation isn’t right within a full year, we make it right at no charge. Our warranty on access control parts is 1 year, including labor.

Here’s the honest split. If your keypad is dead and you want to check whether it’s the keypad or the wiring, a homeowner can remove the keypad face, check for visible moisture or cracked plastic, and confirm the wire connections are tight. That’s about it. The moment you’re testing voltage at the receiver board or swapping a relay, you’re working with live electrical components inside a metal enclosure. Linear access control boards carry voltage that can bite. If you’re not comfortable testing continuity with a multimeter, don’t open the operator housing. We’ve come behind DIY attempts where a homeowner shorted a receiver board and turned a $420 replacement into a $900 full swap by frying the control board alongside it.
