BFT Gate Motor Replacement: The Fort Worth Owner’s Guide
We stock and install BFT-compatible gate motor replacements across Fort Worth, with most residential swing-gate motor swaps running between $850 and $1,650 installed, depending on the series and whether the arm bracket and mounting post are still intact. Same-day replacement is available on most in-stock BFT units, and we carry the Phobos, Deimos, and Rigel series on the trucks that roll through Tarrant County daily. The typical call starts the same way: the gate worked fine for years, then one morning it hums without moving, or moves halfway and stops, or simply went silent after a storm. The capacitor has cooked, the limit switch assembly has drifted, or the gear train has finally surrendered to the heat and grit of a North Texas summer.
- In-stock BFT motors: Phobos N, Phobos NL, Deimos BT, Rigel 4, and Rigel 5 replacements
- Typical installed price: $850-$1,650 for most single swing-gate BFT applications
- What you get before work starts: a written flat price, not an estimate range you’ll reconcile later
- What you get after: a photo log of what was found, what was installed, and the part number on the unit
If your BFT motor is dead in the driveway right now, call (817) 476-9945 and a live person answers. We’ll name the price range on the phone, then confirm it in writing before anyone touches the gate.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
BFT has been running three main residential swing-gate lines in the U.S. market for the better part of a decade, and the replacement path differs for each. The Phobos N and Phobos NL are the most common 24V electromechanical swing operators we pull out of Fort Worth driveways in neighborhoods like Monticello, Ridglea Hills, and out toward Benbrook. The Deimos BT is a lighter-duty 24V unit often paired with smaller ornamental gates, and the Rigel 4 and Rigel 5 are 24V hydraulic operators that show up on heavier iron and steel gates, particularly in Westover Hills and along the Rivercrest corridor where gates run wide and heavy.
Identifying which motor you have takes about thirty seconds. The model name is printed on the aluminum housing, but the more durable identifier is the plate on the underside of the motor body, which lists the series, voltage, and serial range. BFT changed the control-board connector layout between the Phobos N generation and the later NL revision, so a motor swap between those two is not always plug-and-play. On the Rigel line, hydraulic motors can be rebuilt in some cases, but if the internal pump has scored the cylinder wall, a full motor replacement is cheaper than a rebuild. We’re an independent service provider, not a BFT authorized dealer, which means we stock OEM BFT motors alongside equivalent aftermarket options and tell you the real price difference on both. There’s no brand incentive steering you one direction.
Signs Your BFT Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing

- The motor hums but the gate doesn’t move. Almost always the run capacitor, especially on Phobos units that have lived through three or more Texas summers. The capacitor stores starting energy, and when it degrades, the motor can’t get the rotor turning. Sometimes the capacitor is cheaper to replace than the whole motor; we test before we quote a full swap.
- The gate opens halfway, then reverses or stops dead. On Rigel hydraulic units this is usually the internal bypass valve or low hydraulic fluid from a slow seal leak. On electromechanical Phobos units, it’s typically a limit-switch assembly that has drifted out of calibration. The motor may still be fine, but if the gear train has been watching this happen for months, it’s often not.
- You hear a grinding or clicking from inside the housing. Gear teeth have started to shear. BFT uses a worm-drive reduction on most residential units, and when the worm gear loses teeth, the metal shavings contaminate the lubricant, accelerating everything. Once grinding is audible, a new motor is almost always the honest call.
- The gate moves slower every month, especially in the morning. Motor windings degrade over time, and the effect is most visible when temperatures swing. Fort Worth’s freeze-thaw cycles from January through March don’t help. A motor that’s lost 30 percent of its torque may still open the gate, but it’s burning more current and cooking the control board in the process.
- Water intrusion or condensation inside the motor housing. BFT housings are IP-rated, but the North Texas storm season between March and June produces horizontal rain that finds its way into housings that were opened previously and re-sealed poorly. Once the board or rotor sees sustained moisture, corrosion follows. We photograph the inside of the housing on every diagnosis so you can see what we found.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Fort Worth, a BFT gate motor replacement runs $850 to $1,650 installed for the motor itself, the mounting hardware, and the labor to set it. The range moves on three things: which series you have (Rigel hydraulic units cost more than Phobos), whether the motor needs a new mounting post or arm bracket, and whether the existing control board is compatible with the replacement unit’s revision. If the job requires a new control board, that’s a separate line item, quoted in writing before we order or install anything.
Here’s how the numbers typically break down:
- Phobos N / NL replacement motor: $340-$520 for the part, $280-$400 labor, total typically $620-$920 installed
- Deimos BT replacement motor: $300-$450 for the part, $250-$350 labor, total typically $550-$800 installed
- Rigel 4 / Rigel 5 replacement: $650-$950 for the hydraulic unit, $350-$550 labor with fluid flush and bleed, total typically $1,000-$1,500 installed
Every quote is written and handed over before work starts. That’s Haven Standard Clause 1: have it in writing. If we find something during the swap, we stop, photograph it, and present a new written number before touching the next step. You’ll never get a surprise invoice at the end because we don’t work that way. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the new motor and the installation for a full year.
DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest split. What you can safely check: whether the breaker is tripped, whether the gate is physically binding on its hinges, whether there’s visible water inside the housing, and whether the unit is getting power at the outlet. Those are five-minute checks that cost you nothing and help us diagnose faster on the phone.
What you should not do: open a BFT motor housing and start testing internal components. These are 24V systems, so the shock risk is lower than line voltage, but the capacitors on the board store charge and will bite. More importantly, misaligning a limit switch or the internal gear train can turn a failed motor into a gate that closes on a car, a pet, or a person. The photo-eye safety input exists for a reason, and a motor replacement is a loaded mechanical job with real failure points. We’ve pulled BFT units apart in Fort Worth driveways where the homeowner got 80 percent of the way into a “simple swap” and discovered the arm bracket doesn’t line up with the new revision without fabrication. Save the frustration. Call (817) 476-9945 and we’ll have the written price in your hand this afternoon.
FAQs
How long does a BFT gate motor last in Fort Worth?
A properly installed BFT Phobos or Deimos motor typically lasts 7 to 10 years in the Fort Worth climate, though the capacitor often dies first around year 5, which is repairable without replacing the entire motor. Heavy gates, long daily cycles, and motors installed without proper drainage can cut that to 4 to 6 years. We see the shortest lifespans on gates that were never re-greased and on motors mounted low on the post where standing water collects.
Can you repair my BFT gate motor instead of replacing it?
Yes, but the honest answer depends on the failure. Capacitors, limit switches, and some control-board repairs are straightforward fixes. Grinding gear trains, scored hydraulic cylinders, or burnt motor windings are replacement territory. We always test and photograph before quoting either path, and sometimes the repair quote plus labor is 70 percent of a new motor’s cost, at which point we’ll tell you the replacement is the smarter money.
How long does the replacement swap take?
Most BFT motor replacements take 90 minutes to 3 hours on site, depending on whether we’re reusing the existing mounting post and arm bracket or setting new hardware. If the job requires a new control board or rewiring from the keypad or photo-eyes, add another hour. We give you the time window in writing with your quote, and we don’t book overlapping jobs.
Do you stock BFT motors in Fort Worth, or do I have to wait on shipping?
We carry Phobos N, Phobos NL, Deimos BT, and Rigel replacement motors on our vehicles, along with matching control boards, capacitors, and arm kits. If your exact revision is on the truck, same-day replacement is common. If it’s not, we order from our local distributor and you get a written ETA before we ask for a deposit. One company, nine automation brands: LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, Ghost Controls, and BFT are all stocked, so we never need to steer you toward a different brand than what’s on your property.
Call (817) 476-9945 now. A live person picks up, we’ll run through your symptoms, and we’ll tell you what the range looks like before a truck ever rolls.
